One thing I really dislike about Cortana is the inability to resize its search box. Especially if you have a low resolution or non-widescreen monitor, it can easily take up a good chunk of your desktop’s real estate, making the taskbar very crowded very quickly.
Thankfully, you can still hide Cortana’s search bar or replace it with an icon, if you so desire.
Hide Cortana’s search box
To begin, you’ll need to right-click on a free spot on the taskbar and select Search. In the drop-down menu, you can then select Hidden, Show search icon, or Show search box.
Click on whichever you prefer and the search box will either be replaced with an icon or hidden entirely.
Which option to choose?
This depends on your screen’s resolution as well as its aspect ratio. On Full HD screens and higher (that is, those with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and beyond) the search box doesn’t take too much space, so you can leave it as it is.
However, on HD screens and those with an aspect ratio of 4:3 or 5:4, the search bar will take up quite a lot of taskbar space, making it unwieldy to use if you need to keep a lot of windows open at the same time. In these cases, you’re better off hiding it entirely.
Will this prevent me from using Cortana or searching apps and settings
Absolutely not! You can still search your computer by clicking the Start button or pressing the Start key on your keyboard and typing anything you want to look up.
